Augusta Men Capture GOLD at

World Championships 2003 Cancun, Mexico

Augusta businessman, Master Brent J. Crisci, owner and operator of the United Martial Arts Academies headquarters in Augusta, Maine recently competed with the U.S. Team in the 2003 World Martial Arts Championships held in Cancun, Mexico. Master Crisci, a former 3 time World Champion, competed as a member of TEAM USA from 1996 to 2000 around the world and retired in 2001 due to a back injury.

Crisci was featured in the games opening ceremonies demonstrating his world renowned self defense skills from the stick and knife fighting art from the Philippine Islands. As well as, being special guest instructor for a seminar for the hundreds martial arts fans in attendance. He competed in the following divisions; BLACK BELT KUMITE ( A form of full contact fighting with both hands and feet), KATA ( A pre-arranged pattern presentation), WEAPONS ( The application of traditional Asian weaponry in combat), and SELF DEFENSE (The use of martial arts skills in life or death situations with multiple attackers). When the 16 hours of competition with over 800 competitors were completed, Crisci came away as a Triple Crown Gold Medal Winner for the United States Team!

When asked why Crisci came out of retirement for the event sponsored by the World Martial Arts Alliance and the International Martial Arts League he said, “This was a great opportunity for many reasons, it’s a chance to once again represent the greatest country in the world...THE U.S.A. at a time we all need it! It also helped to promote martial arts to the general public and to set an example for all the black belts who teach at my dojos and the students who respect them...”

Master Crisci brought one of his own black belts also from Augusta, Mr. Dallas Smedberg. Smedberg assisted Crisci in his performances, as well as, competed in his own divisions capturing 2 Gold Medals and a Silver for the US Team. The event had several countries in attendance, with a strong team from Mexico.
